Product Review: Fast & Fun Food Prep With the VeggieBullet!

I’ve just gotta say, in general, calling anything a “food fad” irks me. (Remember how kale was the “it” food of 2016?)

Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing people choose healthy options for any reason, but I hate trivializing healthy food by treating it like a hot fashion trend. It’s kale, not a handbag.

Anyways.

On that note, spiralized veggies are insanely popular in the health world right now. It all began with zucchini noodles (aka “zoodles”), and exploded from there.

Spiralizing certainly may be regarded as a fad by some, but “fad” or not, I can get behind it – it’s healthy, it’s easy, and it’s flexible for tons of types of veggies. Better yet, it encourages people to eat more veggies!

Personally, I don’t see anything “wrong” with us, as a culture, having a growing fascination with spiralizing our veggies. It may be “all the rage” in 2017, but I plan to keep on keepin’ on for years to come, baby. I don’t think I’m alone, either.

Really, is it that much different than other commonplace methods of transforming food? We haven’t yet gotten tired of curly fries (or regular-shaped fries, for that matter). Hash browns are here to stay. So why can’t spiralizing “stick” too?! Sigh.

As usual, I was a bit late jumping on the bandwagon, but not for lack of wanting! I’d seriously considered buying a spiralizer from Bed, Bath, & Beyond, but never quite decided on one of the many choices (Veggetti, KitchenAid, OXO, Hamilton Beach, etc.).

Enter the VeggieBullet.

If you’ve read my story, you know that our journey began thanks to the NutriBullet. We’ve been satisfied, loyal customers since 2013, so I knew immediately that the VeggieBullet was “the one”! (It still took me, oh, six months to actually buy one, but hey!)

When a $25 promo code popped up on their FB page, that was the final straw – I had to order! I’m glad I bought directly from the VeggieBullet website – doing so got me three extra blades and the mini bullet blender for free, which you don’t get if you buy in retail stores, all for the same price (plus free shipping).

The only hard part? Waiting for my prize to arrive!

There are criticisms online about how big and “complex” VeggieBullet is. Well, yes, compared to a simple unit that does nothing but spiralize, the VeggieBullet has way more parts and comes in multiple boxes. I admit, when I first unpacked everything, I was a little intimidated – it’s a lot of stuff.

You’ve got realize, though, that this unit does a lot. It’s no one-trick pony, folks.

There are two different attachments: the Spiralizer Set (seen mounted on the base) and the Shredder/Slicer Set (sitting on the counter).

The Spiralizer Set can spiralize four ways, depending which of the four blades you use (Spaghetti, Angel Hair, Udon/Curly Fry, or Ribbon), while the Shredder/Slicer Set performs either shredding or slicing by flipping the double-sided blade.

Here’s a little sneaky-peek into the Spiralizer Set, showing how the blade rests. See the cool catch basket for your spiralized goodies? The basket lifts right out, eliminating the need for a prep bowl.

I love the shape of the Shredder/Slicer Set (below), and using it is really fun! Whatever you’re shredding or slicing comes shooting out to fill your bowl below, lickety-split.

The Shredder/Slicer Set

It may sound a bit complicated, but honestly, once you’ve set it up and used it once, it’s so easy. It no longer feels complex or overwhelming.

For space reasons, I admit, it’s not the smallest thing ever, but we’ve worked around this. We keep the base on the counter, with the Spiralizer Set always mounted, since we use that the most. We store the Shredder/Slicer Set in the cupboard, along with the extra three Spiralizer blades (which come in nifty stackable cases).

The first time I used it, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it went really smoothly. After a few minutes, I felt comfortable and confident. Then, the urge to spiralize literally everything kicked in. Ha!

Not only is it simple, but it’s lightning fast. I honestly spend more time in prep (washing and peeling the veggies) than I do actually using the VeggieBullet.

For example, two Sundays ago, I prepped for three meals at once, to maximize efficiency and minimize clean-up. In about 10 minutes, I spiralized: yellow squash for one dinner, zucchini for a second dinner, and cucumber as a side dish for a third dinner. Bam!

I didn’t take pictures of every meal we made with the above, but lemme tell ya, we made yellow squash stir fry that was excellent! The zoodles went into a lovely Chicken, Tomato, and Pesto dish. Mmmmm.

Honestly, I feel like having the VeggieBullet around has encouraged culinary creativity. I’m eager to find ways to use spiralized veggies, rather than just simply taking inspiration from VeggieBullet’s included recipe book (or Pinterest recipes).

For example, I took those spiralized cukes and made an awesome half organic sour cream/half garlic and dill sauce for them that was killer! It was a perfect side-dish to veggie burgers.

The key is to be open to experimenting! I wanted to do spiralized sweet potato Pad Thai, but the Spaghetti Blade wasn’t working because we cut the potatoes wrong (d’oh!), so we ended up switching to the Ribbon Blade instead. Gotta roll with it!

But, you can totally find ways to use the VeggieBullet for classic favorites, too! The Shredder Blade is excellent for making quick, cost-efficient homemade hash browns, and I also plan to use it for making my own broccoli slaw! And, we simply cannot wait to bake our own curly sweet potato fries!

Not to mention, chopping is a breeze! When I shredded our hash browns, I also used the VeggieBullet to slice zucchinis for the next day’s dinner. I was already dirtying the Shredder/Slicer Set, and going from shredding to slicing was as simple as flipping the blade over! Two birds, one stone. Or, one clean-up, should I say?

All in all, I’m extremely pleased with our purchase thus far. We cook six nights a week, so this was a great investment. I’m thrilled with the meals we’ve made, and love including even more veggies than usual.

Personally, I think the VeggieBullet is worth its weight in gold, and I can’t wait to have even more fun with it!

Wishing you healthier, happier days!
